The Twelve Steps to Humility is the 7th Chapter of Saint Benedict's Rule for Laymen and Monks. It is also known as the Rule of Saint Benedict.
Brief biography of St. Benedict.
The Visigoths sacked Rome in 410 A.D.
When Saint Benedict went to Rome in the 490s, as a teenager, he was shocked by the wide spread pagan belief systems, immorality, and disillusionment of the people.
He withdrew from the city and entered into a life of prayer and self-renunciation.
He did not forget the people whom he left in Rome and he wrote a rule that lay people could use to reclaim their lives in Christ.
The Seventh Chapter of the Rule is a good guide to help people begin their journeys on reclaiming their own lives.
It seems counterintuitive, but acquiring some measure of humility is an important step to healing from a traumatic past. Because it was written during a time very similar to our own times, this treatise on Humility is very useful in gently guiding us to a path of recovery and redemption.
